Games Research

As I have been doing the game tutorial I decided to do some research and get a better understanding of video games.

1958 – William Higinbotham an american physicist created a gamed called “Tennis for Two” this was one of the first electronic games to use a graphical display, it was created on an analog computer and was played on an oscilloscope.

1961 – Steve Russell a student from MIT, created “Spacewar”, this was the first interactive computer game. He created it on a DEC PDP-1.

1966 – Ralph Baer, he was an engineer at Sanders Associates was undergoing a way for video games to appear on televisions.

1967 – Ralph and his team became successful and were able to create two interactive TV games, one was a chase game the other was a tennis game.

1970 – Magnavox signs a deal with Baers to develop Odyssey.

1972 – Nolan Bushnell forms “Computer Space” it becomes the first video arcade game.

1972 – Pong released as an arcade game.

1972 – Odyssey became the first home video game system.

1974 – Atari produced a home version of Pong.

1978 – Space Invaders is released by Tatio.

1978 – Mattel Electronics releases their handheld LED-based Baseball.

1980 – Pacman was released in Japan, played on micro hoe computer.

1983 – Nintendo release their first computer and Mario is related at the same time.

1985 – Nintendo release the NES.

1989 – Game Boy released from Nintendo.

1989 – Sega released the Sega Gensis.

1991 – Somic was produced by Sega to somewhat compete with Mario.

1994 – Playstation released in Japan by Sony.

1996 – Nintendo released the Nintendo 64

1999 – Dreamcast, 128 bit processor, was released in the UK.

2001 – Gamecube released by Nintendo

2001 – Microsoft comes out with the Xbox, to join the console market.

2001 – Playstation 2 comes out.

2004 – PSP

November 2006 – Playstation 3

December 2006 – Xbox 360

December 2006 – Nintendo Wii

2010 – Playstation Move & Xbox Kinect

2013 – Playstation 4

Throughout these years many games with different genres came out with these various consoles for example, GTA, Minecraft, Call of Duty, LittleBigPlanet, Mario, Tetris, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Star Wars and World of Warcraft just to name a few.

In my opinion if the Gameboy wasn’t released, everything handheld would be completely as the Gameboy was designed to be able to change the game you had in instead of it being one game. If this hadn’t happened the iPhone would have been designed very differently but because of the Gameboy iPhones have been able to evolve from that so you can listen to music, play games etc. In 1983 Mario was released as part of the game Donkey Kong but between 1983 – 1985 the video game industry went down money was lost going from a few billion to hundred million, people believed that this was the end of video games. In 1985 Super Mario Bros was released and saved the whole video game industry, the game became addictive and popularity was never ending. The game is known to have changed the face of 2D games forever. If these main events didn’t occur then gaming would be completely different as well as various technology.
