Chris Cunningham Born 15th October 1970, Reading Berkshire. He is a Filmmaker, video artist, photographer and music producer. He has mainly directed music videos for ambient music and electronica artist for example Autechre and Aphex Twin. Cunningham has also created art installations and directed short movies, he has also designed album artwork for a various musicians. Chris Cunningham has worked with various artists such as Madonna, Portishead, Apex Twin and Duster just to name a few. He has mainly done videos and commercials, Cunningham’s main genre when it comes to music is electronica. Cunningham main techniques are ‘really getting inside it and let it suggest a little universe to create’.

 

Spike Jonze –  Born 22nd October 1969, Rockville Maryland. He is a Film director, film producer, screenwriter and actor. His work includes music videos, commercials, film and television, he also was the co-creator and executive producer of MTV’s Jackass, he is the currently the creative director of Vice Media and part owner of a skateboard company. Jonze has co-founded Directors Label with Chris Cunningham, Michael Gondry and the Palm Pictures company. Spike Jonze has been known for his music video collaborations with Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Weezer, the Beastie Boys, Bjork and Kanye West, only to name a few. When it comes to movies Jonze uses various techniques he makes the most out of simple elements for example lens flares, floating camera movement, centred framing and wide-angle close-ups, Jonze creates an atmosphere which appears to be lifted straight from the pages of a fairytale book.

 

Michel Gondry – Born 8th May 1963, Versailles France. He is Film director, screenwriter, film producer and music video director. Gondry gas been noted for his inventive visual style and distinctive manipulation of mise en scene, he has won an Acamdey Award for Best Original Screenplay as he was one of the writers of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it is often ranked as one of the greatest films of the 2000’s. Gondry has been known as ‘the most unpredictable  man in film’. He has collaborated with Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Bjork, Kanye West, Adam Levine, Paul McCartney and The White Stripes just naming the more known. The main techniques Gondry uses VFX ‘is a legend in VFX field’ and ‘has an encyclopaedic knowledge of special effects and the history of animation’

 

David Fincher – Born 28 August 1962, Denver Colorado. He is a Film director, film producer, television director, television producer and music video director. He has won the Golden Globe Award for Best Director and the BAFTA Award for Best Direction. Fincher has worked with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Rick Springfield, The Motels, The Rolling Stones and Madonna just to name a few. One of his main trademarks are ‘where dark lighting is combined with a color overlay/filter and crisp cinematography’ and ‘the color palette of his films are all very similar’. More recently in the late 90’s and early 2000’s till now he has focused more on directing movies such as Alien 3, Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Social Network, Gone Girl and tv series House of Cards but this only to name a few.

 

Mark Romanek – Born 18th September 1959, Chicago Illinois. He is a director, screenwriter and producer, his work includes feature films, television, music videos and commercials. Romanek’s music videos have won 20 MTV Video Music Awards, which includes Best Direction for Jay Z’s ’99 Problems. He has also won three Grammy Awards for Best Short Form Music Video, that is more than any other director. Romanek has worked with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Coldplay and Lenny Kravitz only naming a few.’Mark Romanek has directed an extensive list of music videos linked with successful artists throughout all genres of music’. ‘His music videos generally follow no meta-narratives and are not necessarily chronological.’

 

Anton Corbijn – Born 20th May 1955, Strijen Netherlands but lives in London. He is a photographer, film director and music video director. He has worked with the likes of Nirvana, Metallica, Depeche Mode, Coldplay and The Killers multiple times. ‘He started out photographing musicians like the BeeGees and R.E.M. and then he moved on to directing music videos and feature films. There is documentary/biography about ‘Anton Corbijin where a filmmaker Klaartje Quirijins follows him around as he travels around the world doing photography and making films’. ‘Corbijn is quite modest when it comes to talking about the work he has produced he says ‘ to focus on having intimacy with his subjects’ this has then become his outstanding signature style.

 

Floria Sigismondi – Born in 1965 (No birthday found) Pescara Italy, she is photographer and director and is mainly known for writing and directing the film ‘The Runaways’. Sigismondi started directing music videos when she was approached by a production company ‘The Revolver Film Co’. In 2013 she directed Justin Timberlake ‘Mirrors’ music video which ended up winning video of the year at the MYV Music Awards and is also a two time MVPA winner of director of the year in 2006 and 2013. Sigismondi is known for her dark aesthetic ‘whose disturbing skills are quickly making her a star in her own right’. Sigismondi has worked with David Bowie, Ellie Goulding, Rihanna, Katy Perry and P!nk, only naming a few.

 

Hannah Lux Davis – Born 17th May 1986, Bellevue Washington, she is a music video director, director, make up artist and editor when she was 18 years old she enrolled into the New York Film Academy and the next year she went to Los Angles Film School. Davis’ final projects at both them the schools she decided to make music videos thats when she thought she would pursue a career in the music video industry. Davis also worked as a makeup artist as she went to  Cinema Makeup School this then allowed her to go on various sets of music videos, commercials and feature films. When Hannah got the job for directing a music video for Lil Wayne,Drake & Future, they did a double take when she arrived on set because of that video they won 2013 MTV Music Video Award Winner for Best Hip Hop Video, she has helped Fifth Harmony win ‘2014 Artist to Watch’. Her main techniques are easily recognised because of its ‘attention to detail, vibrant colours and striking looks’. A lot of the top artists have used her multiple times as she creates ‘the perfect visuals to accompany some of their biggest hits’, when artists want their video video to be the most beautiful Dvais is the one they go to ‘resulting the videos and iconic imagery have gained billions of views around the world’. Hannah Davis has worked with the following artists multiple times including Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, DNCE, Demi Lovato, Jessie J, Ciara, Nick Jonas, Sage the Gemini, Snoop Dogg and Charles Wilson.
